Note from Ana

My kids looove strawberries, so I always take full advantage when fragrant strawberries are in season. And during hot Australian summer days, this smoothie is such a perfect breakfast for the whole family. It is cold, fruity, quick to make, and feels like exactly the kind of thing everyone wants first thing in the morning when the day is already warming up.

We love this recipe because it is simple, reliable, and made with flavours that everybody happily says yes to. The strawberries bring that sweet, fresh berry taste, the banana makes it creamy and smooth, and together they turn into one of those classic combinations that just works every single time. It feels wholesome, but also a little bit like a treat, which is always a very nice category of breakfast in my kitchen.

And sometimes, or more honestly, usually, no matter how much of this smoothie I make, some child always wants more. That is both the blessing and the curse of a really good smoothie. You feel very pleased that everyone loves it, and then two minutes later you are looking into an empty blender wondering if you should have doubled it from the start.

If you are looking for another refreshing strawberry drink for hot summer days, try my Strawberry Lemonade too. It is absolutely delish and just as cheerful as this smoothie, only in a slightly more sippable, ice-filled kind of way.

All the best,

Ana

How to serve

Serve this Strawberry Banana Smoothie straight away, while it is cold, creamy, and at its absolute best. I love it for breakfast with toast, granola, or something simple on the side, but it is also perfect as an after-school snack, a quick afternoon pick-me-up, or even a light little treat on a hot day. If you want to make it feel extra nice, pour it into pretty glasses and top it with a sliced strawberry, a few banana coins, or a sprinkle of chia seeds. You can also make it a bit thicker and serve it as a smoothie bowl with granola, coconut, and fresh fruit on top. It is one of those easy recipes that fits beautifully into busy family life.

Tips for Success

  • Use ripe bananas for the best flavour and texture. A banana with a few brown spots is perfect here because it gives the smoothie natural sweetness and that lovely creamy finish without needing much extra help.
  • Frozen strawberries are wonderful in this recipe because they make the smoothie colder and thicker right away. If you are using fresh strawberries, add a few ice cubes to get that same refreshing texture.
  • Start with the smaller amount of milk, then add more if needed. It is always easier to loosen a smoothie than to fix one that has gone too thin. A little control at the start saves disappointment later.
  • Blend it until completely smooth. It only takes a few extra seconds, but it makes such a difference. You want the smoothie silky and creamy, not a little lumpy and confused.
  • Taste before serving. Depending on how sweet your strawberries are, you may not need the maple syrup at all. Some fruit does all the work for you, which is always nice.
  • Use cold ingredients if possible. Cold milk, frozen strawberries, and even chilled banana slices all help make the smoothie feel extra refreshing, especially on warm mornings.
  • And one little tip from me, make a bit more than you think you need if kids are involved. A smoothie this good has a way of disappearing very fast, and someone almost always wants “just a little more.”

Substitutions & Variations

  • This smoothie is wonderfully easy to adjust depending on what you have at home. If you do not have strawberries, raspberries or blueberries work beautifully too, though of course the flavour will change a little. If you want to keep the strawberry feel but make it even fruitier, a few peaches or mango chunks can be a lovely addition.
  • For the milk, use whatever suits your family best. Regular milk makes it creamy and classic, but oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk all work nicely too. Each one gives the smoothie a slightly different flavour, so it is really just about what you enjoy most.
  • If you want a creamier or more filling version, add a spoonful of Greek yogurt, vanilla yogurt, or even a little nut butter. Peanut butter with banana and strawberry is especially delicious if you want something a bit more hearty.
  • Maple syrup is completely optional, and you can swap it for honey, agave, or leave it out altogether if your fruit is sweet enough. A splash of vanilla is lovely, but you can also add a pinch of cinnamon or a few chia seeds if you want to change things up a little.
  • And if you want to turn it into more of a smoothie bowl, just use a little less milk so it stays thicker, then top it with granola, coconut flakes, sliced fruit, or seeds. It is one of those easy little recipes that is very happy to be adapted.

Storage Tips

This Strawberry Banana Smoothie is definitely best enjoyed fresh, right after blending, when it is cold, creamy, and full of that lovely fruity flavour. That is when it tastes its happiest.

If you do have leftovers, pour the smoothie into a jar or airtight container and keep it in the fridge for up to 1 day. Give it a really good shake or stir before drinking, because smoothies naturally separate a little as they sit. That is completely normal, so no need to worry.

If you want to get ahead, I think the best trick is to prep the fruit in advance. Keep sliced banana in the freezer and strawberries ready to go, so when smoothie time comes, you are already halfway there and feeling very organised, which is always a nice surprise.

I would not really recommend freezing the fully blended smoothie unless you want to turn it into popsicles or freeze it in cubes for later blending. Fresh is best here, and luckily it only takes a few minutes to make.

For a vegan smoothie, use plant-based yogurt and milk, and sweeten with maple syrup instead of honey
