Note from Ana

We are so lucky here in Australia to have such beautiful fruit, and I honestly do not think I will ever stop being grateful for that. Fresh fruit is such a big part of everyday life here, and believe it or not, kiwi is one of my absolute favourites. I know bananas get all the smoothie attention, but kiwi really deserves its moment too.

I was actually so surprised when I learned that many people have never even tried kiwi. If you are one of those people, I completely understand, because kiwi does have a bit of a reputation for being tart. But that is usually only true when it is underripe. A good ripe kiwi is something completely different. It is sweet, bright, juicy, and full of fresh tropical flavour with just enough tang to keep it interesting. It makes smoothies taste fresh and lively instead of heavy or flat.

The easiest way to tell if a kiwi is ripe is to gently press it with your fingers. It should give just a little, like a ripe pear or avocado, but not feel mushy. If it is rock hard, it needs more time. If you buy firm kiwis, just leave them on the kitchen bench for a few days and they will ripen beautifully. If you want to speed things up, place them in a bowl or paper bag with a banana or apple. That little trick works so well and makes the kiwis ripen faster, which feels like a small kitchen miracle every time.

We love this smoothie because it is so simple, but it tastes like something a little special. The banana makes it creamy, the kiwi makes it bright and refreshing, and together they make the loveliest combination. It is one of those smoothies that feels cheerful from the very first sip. Fresh, smooth, a little tangy, a little sweet, and just so easy to love.

This is the kind of drink I make when I want something quick but still beautiful, something that feels good to serve and even better to drink. And honestly, any recipe that helps me use more kiwi in season is already a winner in my house.

All the best,

Ana

Why you’ll love this recipe

Main ingredients:
This smoothie is made with just a handful of fresh, simple ingredients; kiwi, banana, Greek yogurt, and a little orange juice, but together they make something that feels bright, creamy, and a little special. It is the kind of recipe that proves you do not need anything complicated to make something truly delicious.

How it’s made:
Everything goes straight into the blender and is blended until smooth, creamy, and perfectly fresh. It comes together in just minutes, which makes it such a lovely option for busy mornings, afternoon pick-me-ups, or anytime you want something quick that still feels homemade and beautiful.

Flavours:
This smoothie is creamy, fresh, sweet, and just a little tangy in the best way. The banana makes it soft and smooth, while the kiwi brings that bright, happy flavour that makes every sip feel refreshing and full of life. It is one of those drinks that feels light, cheerful, and instantly uplifting.

How to Serve

Serve this kiwi banana smoothie straight away, while it is cold, creamy, and at its freshest. I like pouring it into glasses and serving it just as it is for a quick breakfast, an easy afternoon snack, or a little fresh treat on a warm day. If you want to make it feel a bit more filling, serve it with toast, granola, or something simple on the side. It is also lovely with a light breakfast plate if you are putting together an easy brunch at home.

Tips for Success

  • The biggest tip for a really good kiwi banana smoothie is to use ripe fruit. This makes all the difference. A ripe kiwi will taste sweet, bright, and full of flavour, while an underripe one can be a little too sharp. The banana should also be nicely ripe, because that is what gives the smoothie its natural sweetness and creamy texture.
  • If you can, use a frozen banana. It makes the smoothie thicker, colder, and much creamier without needing lots of ice. Too much ice can water the flavour down, so frozen banana is always my favourite little trick for a smoothie that tastes better and feels more café-style.
  • Another good tip is not to skip the tiny pinch of salt. I know it sounds small, but it really helps sharpen the fruit flavours and makes everything taste brighter. The vanilla does something similar, it is not there to make the smoothie taste like dessert, just to round everything out and make it feel softer and more complete.
  • Start with the liquid listed in the recipe, then adjust only if needed. Kiwis and bananas can vary a little, so sometimes the smoothie needs a splash more water or orange juice to blend smoothly. It is always easier to thin it out than to fix a smoothie that has become too runny.
  • And finally, serve it straight away. Smoothies are always best when they are freshly blended, cold, and full of that lovely airy texture. It only takes a minute to make, so this is one of those recipes where fresh really is worth it.

Substitutions & Variations

  • This smoothie is such an easy one to adjust, which is one of the reasons I love it so much. If you do not have Greek yogurt, you can use plain natural yogurt instead. It will still be creamy and delicious, just a little lighter in texture. For a dairy-free version, coconut yogurt works really well and gives the smoothie a lovely tropical feel.
  • If you do not have orange juice, you can use a little more water, coconut water, or even a splash of apple juice. Orange juice adds brightness, but the smoothie will still taste fresh and beautiful with other options too.
  • For the banana, frozen is my favourite because it makes everything extra creamy, but a fresh ripe banana works perfectly well too. You can just add a few ice cubes if you want the smoothie colder.
  • There are also a few lovely little extras you can add depending on the mood. A spoonful of chia seeds makes it a bit thicker and more filling, while a handful of spinach blends in so easily and keeps the smoothie looking fresh and vibrant. If your fruit is not as sweet as you hoped, a tiny drizzle of honey or maple syrup can round it out beautifully.
  • If you want to change the flavour a little, you can add mango, pineapple, or even a little avocado for a different twist. Mango makes it sweeter and more tropical, pineapple adds more tang, and avocado makes it extra silky.
  • And if you want to turn it into more of a breakfast smoothie, you can blend in a few spoonfuls of oats. It makes it more filling and gives it that lovely smoothie-meets-breakfast feel that is so handy on busy mornings.

Storage Tips

This smoothie is definitely best enjoyed straight after blending, while it is cold, creamy, and full of that fresh kiwi flavour. That is when it tastes the brightest and has the nicest texture.

If you do have leftovers, pour them into a jar or airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 1 day. Just give it a really good shake or stir before drinking, because smoothies naturally separate a little as they sit.

One little thing to keep in mind is that kiwi is at its best when fresh, so the smoothie may lose a bit of its bright colour and lively flavour if left too long. It will still be fine to drink, but it is definitely one of those recipes that shines most when made and served right away.
