In my books, a bowl of fruit is always a good idea. It is fresh, colourful, easy, and somehow manages to feel both healthy and a little bit festive at the same time. I honestly do not think you can go wrong with good fruit on the table.
But to be honest, I do find it interesting how differently fruit is treated here in Australia compared to Croatia. In Australia, people really do eat a lot of fruit, and even when you are visiting someone at home, it is completely normal to be offered a beautiful platter or bowl of fresh fruit. In Croatia, that is much less common. We are far more likely to bring out a board with prosciutto, cheese, bread, and all the savoury little things that make you want to stay at the table for hours. I love noticing these little lifestyle differences. It is such a small thing, but it says so much about everyday life and what feels natural in different places.
Anyway, as I was saying, we love fruit in our family, and living here means we get such a long hot season and, thankfully, a long season of juicy, beautiful fruit too. That is something I never take for granted. When the fruit is sweet and ripe, it really does not need much help at all. Just cutting it up and putting it in a bowl already feels like a treat.
This is exactly why we love this simple fruit salad so much. It is quick, fresh, and full of all those bright, happy colours that instantly make the table feel more inviting. It works for breakfast, a snack, a side dish, or dessert, and somehow always feels like the right choice when the weather is warm.
And when I am being cheeky, yes, I will absolutely add a little dollop of whipped cream on top. Because why not? Fruit is wonderful on its own, but fruit with whipped cream has a very charming way of making itself feel just a little more dressed up. Still, even without it, this salad is beautiful exactly as it is, simple, juicy, and full of sunshine.
Best,
Ana

Why you’ll love this recipe
Main ingredients:
This fruit salad is made with a beautiful mix of juicy watermelon, sweet strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, peaches, and fresh mint. It is simple, colourful, and full of fresh ingredients that already feel like summer before you even take the first bite.
How it’s made:
The fruit is chopped, tossed together, and finished with fresh mint and a little rum for extra flavour. It comes together so quickly, with no cooking and very little effort, which makes it such a lovely recipe for warm days, easy entertaining, or whenever you want something fresh and pretty on the table.
Flavours:
This salad is juicy, bright, sweet, and incredibly refreshing. The fruit brings all those lovely natural flavours, the mint adds freshness, and together it tastes light, cheerful, and full of sunshine. It is the kind of dish that feels easy, happy, and almost impossible not to keep going back to for one more spoonful.

How to serve
Serve this fruit salad well chilled, straight from the fridge, so it feels extra fresh and juicy. I love serving it in little individual bowls. It is lovely on its own as a light dessert, but it also works beautifully with a little dollop of whipped cream, some yogurt, or even alongside cake, pancakes, or brunch dishes. On hot days, it is exactly the kind of simple, refreshing dish that fits in anywhere and always looks inviting on the table.
Tips for Success
- The biggest tip for a really good fruit salad is to use ripe, sweet fruit. Because this recipe is so simple, the flavour depends almost entirely on the fruit itself. If the peaches are hard or the strawberries are lacking sweetness, the salad will never feel quite as lovely as it should. Good fruit really is everything here.
- Try to cut the fruit into similar bite-sized pieces. It makes the salad easier to eat and helps every spoonful feel nicely balanced. You want a little mix of everything, not one giant chunk of pineapple taking over the moment.
- Another important little tip is to add delicate fruit gently and toss with a light hand. Fruit salad should look fresh and beautiful, not bruised and tired. This is especially true for peaches and strawberries, which can soften quickly once mixed.
- If you are using the rum, keep it light. You want it to add a subtle little depth and warmth, not overpower the fruit. The same goes for the honey, only add it if the fruit truly needs it. When the fruit is good, it really does most of the work on its own.
- Fresh mint adds such a lovely lift, but I would chop it just before adding so it stays bright and fragrant. And if you are making the salad ahead, it is best to wait a little before adding the mint so it does not darken too much in the fridge.
- And finally, chill the salad before serving, but not for too long. About 30 minutes is lovely because it gives the flavours time to come together while still keeping the fruit fresh and lively. It is one of those recipes that shines most when it feels cool, juicy, and full of life.
Substitutions & Variations
- This fruit salad is one of those lovely recipes that is easy to change depending on the season, what looks best at the shop, or what you already have at home. If you do not have peaches, you can use nectarines, mango, or even grapes instead. If strawberries are not at their best, try raspberries or extra blueberries.
- For the melon, rockmelon or honeydew can be used instead of watermelon, and if pineapple is not your thing, you can simply leave it out or replace it with more stone fruit. This is very much the kind of recipe that works best when you follow the fruit.
- If you want to keep it completely family-friendly, you can leave out the rum and the salad will still be absolutely delicious. A little extra lime juice or orange juice can be lovely instead if you still want that fresh, bright finish.
- The honey is completely optional too. If your fruit is already beautifully sweet, you probably will not need it. But if the fruit is a little less ripe than you hoped, a drizzle can help bring everything together. You can also use maple syrup if you prefer.
- For the herbs, mint is my favourite because it makes the whole bowl taste extra fresh, but basil can also be really lovely if you want something a little different. It gives the salad a slightly more grown-up, summery feel.
- And if you want to dress it up a little, you can serve it with a dollop of whipped cream, a spoonful of Greek yogurt, or even a little vanilla ice cream on the side. It turns a simple fruit salad into a dessert very quickly, and I have to say, I am not against that at all.
Storage Tips
This fruit salad is definitely best enjoyed fresh, when the fruit is still juicy, bright, and looking its prettiest. That is when it really tastes the most refreshing.
If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 to 2 days. Just keep in mind that softer fruits like peaches and strawberries will release a bit of juice as they sit, so the salad may become a little softer over time. It will still taste lovely, just a bit more relaxed and less picture-perfect.
If you are making it ahead, one little tip is to add the mint closer to serving time so it stays fresh and bright. And if you are planning to serve it with whipped cream, definitely add that at the end rather than storing it together.
Before serving leftovers, give the fruit a gentle stir and, if needed, add a few fresh pieces of fruit or a little extra mint to freshen everything up.

Simple Fruit Salad
Ingredients
- 2 cups watermelon cubed
- 1 cup strawberries hulled and halved
- 1 cup blueberries
- 1 cup pineapple cubed
- 2 peaches sliced
- 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves chopped
- 2 tbsp rum (white or dark, depending on preference), optional
- 2 tbsp honey optional
Instructions
- Prepare the Fruits: Wash and prepare all the fruits. Cube the watermelon and pineapple, hull and halve the strawberries, slice the peaches, and leave the blueberries whole.
- Combine the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, and peach slices.
- Add Mint and Rum: Sprinkle the chopped fresh mint leaves over the fruit. Drizzle the rum over the top and gently toss to combine. If you prefer a sweeter salad, drizzle with honey and toss again.
- Chill Before Serving: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the fruit salad for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Serve: Give the salad a gentle toss before serving. Enjoy your refreshing summer fruit salad chilled.
- Dobar tek!
